1.
INTRODUCTION
Listserv is the computer database that stores the files associated with DQMW-L
and provides the space for our discussion list to exist. It can be confusing
at first when dealing with Listserv, but with this guide, we hope you will become
more comfortable. Feel free to refer to this file whenever you need it.
2. ARCHIVED INFORMATION FILES
You can send the message:
INDEX DQMW-L
to listserv@listserv.uga.edu
to get a list of all archived and log files (see below) for DQMW-L.
A. Episode Guides
We have an Episode Guide compiled by list members. It is divided by season (Season1
- Season5 corresponding respectively to US broadcast Season 1 - Season 5) to
make it more easily retrievable online. To receive a copy, please send the appropriate
following message to listserv@listserv.uga.edu:
GET DQMW-L SEASON1
GET DQMW-L SEASON2
GET DQMW-L SEASON3
GET DQMW-L SEASON4
GET DQMW-L SEASON5
You can get all 5 Episode Guides at once by sending the following message to
listserv@listserv.uga.edu:
Get DQMW-L EPGUIDE
This Episode Guide is also available on the Web, updated to include season 6
and the two Dr. Quinn movies:

http://www.drquinnmd.com
D. Social Issues
There is a file listing all of the social issues covered on the series. To get
this file, send the message:
GET DQMW-L ISSUES
to listserv@listserv.uga.edu
E. All Archived Information Files
You can retrieve all the archived information files described above (A-D), along
with another copy of the main files (Welcome, Commands, FAQ, History), by sending
the message:
GET DQMW-L PACKAGE
to listserv@listserv.uga.edu
3. LISTSERV COMMANDS
If your email system has an address book or a names file, it's a good idea to
enter the following 2 addresses into it so you don't have to retype the address
each time you need it.
The first address should be that for listserv (which manages your account and
the information stored for DQMW-L):
LISTSERV@LISTSERV.UGA.EDU
The 2nd is the one for the group itself: DQMW-L@LISTSERV.UGA.EDU
The case (UPPER or lower) of the commands discussed below does not matter. We
used UPPER case for emphasis.
A. Where do I send listserv commands?
All commands for the List, as well as those discussed in this item (#3) MUST
be sent to:
LISTSERV@LISTSERV.UGA.EDU
B. How do I join DQMW-L?
Send the following message to listserv:
SUBSCRIBE DQMW-L YourFirstName YourLastName
Once subscribed, you will automatically get information on how to post to the
group in the Welcome to DQMW-L message. You can also use whatever name you choose
when you subscribe. For instance, if you wish to use an online persona, that
is acceptable. (e.g. Anne Vil)
C. How do I unsubscribe from DQMW-L?
Send the following message to listserv:
SIGNOFF DQMW-L
D. How do I get the digest version of the list?
The digest is a daily log of all mail posted to DQMW-L for that day. Everyone
who reads DQMW-L from an online service where you pay for your time online or
you pay by the message might want to get the digest version of DQMW-L. You should
download the digest and read it off-line. This will save you $$$. DQMW-L is
at times a high volume list.
To receive the digest version of DQMW-L, send the following message to listserv:
SET DQMW-L DIG
E. I am going on vacation and I don't want any mail while I'm gone but I don't
want to have to resubscribe when I come back - what should I do?
You should turn your mail off by sending the following mail to listserv:
SET DQMW-L NOMAIL
(please note that there is no space between "no" and "mail"
- it's one word: nomail)
* * * * * IMPORTANT * * * * *
Autoresponders
Many people use autoresponders from their offices or home e-mail programs. These
cause problems with Listserv. Please make certain to either go nomail or on
digest during your time away.
When you come back from vacation, send one of the following messages to listserv
to turn your mail back on:
(1). If you received regular mail where each item came separately, use:
SET DQMW-L MAIL
or
(2). If you received the digest, use
SET DQMW-L DIG
4. LISTSERV ARCHIVES
Listserv is full of files that you can retrieve for additional information and
research, or if you misplaced an important file sent to you when you joined.
The standard format for file retrieval is
GET FILENAME FILETYPE
Every DQMW-L file you will retrieve has "DQMW-L" as the filename;
the filetype varies.
A. I was on vacation but now I want to catch up on all of the great DQMW-L mail
I missed. How do I get the archives?
DQMW-L mail is archived in a log file on a volume basis. A new file is started
roughly every 3000 lines.
Retrieval of a log file is a 2-step process. First you need to get a list of
the archived files. You get this by sending the following message to listserv:
INDEX DQMW-L
You will get an e-mail back that contains a list of files with dates. The current
working log is called DQMW-L Notebook. The other files all have the format of
"DQMW-L Log1234A", where the "1234" is a sequence number
representing the year/month. The "A" represents the week within each
month. For example:
GET DQMW-L LOG0305C
would mean you're requesting the log for the third week (C) of May (05) of 2003
(03).
The date attached to each file indicates the date it was created. From this
date, you can figure out which files you need to catch up on the reading.
To get a LOG file from listserv send the following message:
GET DQMW-L LOG1234A (replacing "1234a" with the appropriate sequence)
To get the current working log, send the message
GET DQMW-L NOTEBOOK
You can retrieve more than one log file at a time. To do this, you have to use
a separate "get" command for each file. For example,
GET DQMW-L LOG1234A
GET DQMW-L LOG1234B
B. How can I get this Listserv message again?
To get the Welcome message (this file), send the message:
GET DQMW-L COMMANDS
to listserv@listserv.uga.edu
C. I was getting mail but I haven't received any for several days. What happened
and what should I do to start it again?
The most likely cause for this is that your system went down and mail bounced
back to UGA or your system is slow in delivering your mail. The first thing
you should do is check that your DQMW-L account is working. To do this send
the following message to listserv:
QUERY DQMW-L
Listserv will send you a file showing all of your subscription options. If you
are not subscribed, you will get a message stating so (Listserv may have removed
you since it got too much returned mail). If you are not subscribed, go back
to #3A above.
When you get your subscription info back from listserv, check where it says
"mail= ". If it says "mail=nomail", you need to send a message
to listserv setting the mail option you want (mail or dig) as described in #3E
above. If it says "mail=mail" or "mail=dig" then you just
lost mail and you should go to #4A above to get the log files which will have
the mail you missed.
If you do not get anything back from listserv within a day, then your email
system at your site is down or a relay node along the Internet is having problems.
The best thing to do is wait a day or so and see if the problems get fixed.
If the problem is at UGA, the listowner will already know about it and be assured
that there are a lot of people trying to fix it as soon as possible.
D. Is there a reference card with a list of all commands for Listserv?
Yes, send the following message to listserv:
GET LISTSERV REFCARD
This refcard is rather cryptic. We've translated a lot of it in this file. Much
of it you don't need, since some commands apply to Listserv in general and not
to the DQMW-L portion.
E. I was on regular mail and now I'm on digest. What happened?
Your mail was bouncing and the list manager set you to digest to stop the flow
of bouncing mail and to enable you to get all the day's mail if your problems
get fixed by the end of the day.
F. I flunked this course. I sent a lot of wrong messages to listserv and it
got upset. Listserv tells me I am now "unserved" and I cannot even
post to DQMW-L anymore. HELP!
Send an email to the list manager and be very nice! (grins) You'll get "re-served"
as soon as possible. Carefully reread the instructions in this file.
A list manager can also help anyone with their listserv settings. Just be aware
that it may take a few days to get a response.
There you have it. Your crash course in Listserv is complete. If you have any
further questions, post to the List or contact a list manager. They're always
glad to help.
