Swedish Immigrants

Although everyone except the American Indians were 'immigrants' to the US, prejudice against specific ethnic and racial groups surged throughout Colorado Springs, particularly against the Swedish and the blacks in our community. Ingrid and her family were forced to live in a settlement outside of town that consisted of tents with dirt bottoms. They were not afforded the luxury of wooden buildings or even beds in most cases, and they ate whatever meager food they could find.

But through it all, Ingrid managed to rise above her circumstances and find love with Matthew Cooper. She also found work for many residents in and around our town, even taking a job to care for children in a family in the next town to save money for when she and Matthew married.

We'll have more on Ingrid in future issues.
